To fulfil the food demand for growing population, we have to find out different ways of food production. The rabbit known as “Micro-Livestock” can be a great source of food production. There is a great opportunity of rabbit farming, and commercial production can be a great source of income and employment. Rabbits need small place for living and less food for surviving. Rabbit meat contains high ratio of protein, energy, calcium and vitamin than any other types of animal meat. The amount of cholesterol, fat and sodium is also less than other meat.
Their meat is very tasty, nutritious and easily digestible for all ages of people. And there is no religious taboo for consuming rabbit meat. Rabbits grow very fast and the female rabbit produce 3 to 10 kits every month. They can consume very low-quality food and turn these foods to high quality meat, skin or fibre.
Raising rabbit can be a great income source to the unemployed graduate and landless farmers. So commercial rabbit farming business can be a great source to meetup the food or protein demand and a great source of employment. You can start raising rabbits in both deep litter and cage farming methods, but I recommend the cage system as it is low maintenance and has high returns.
To construct an all-round caged system, you’ll need;
A bundle of Wire mesh – Ghc 750
6 (2 x 6 inches wood) plank – Ghc 400
A small shed – Ghc 600
Pliers and repair supplies – 100
PVC pipes – Ghc 100
Drinking Nipples – Ghc 50
Sawdust – Free
The next thing to make ready is the breeding stock (Starting animals) and some quality feed.
You can get a feed supply that would last for 3 – 4 months, at this age you can sell your fryers for some good cash. E.g. Feed – 600 cedis every 3 months for 30 – 60 animals
